Sale of the Century
EBay has been a treasure trove of fly tying collectibles over the last couple weeks with flies from some of the great tyers of our time. On April 25th and 26th starting at 8:00PDT the auction of over 2200 highly collectible lots gets started on EBay Live. If you want to take part in this auction, you will need to sign up ahead of time. Lots of items come from the estate of Ernest Schwiebert including many books inscribed to him, his personal fly tying materials and even his fishing vest.
There is also an impressive collection of flies tied by the likes of Lee Wulff, Ray Bregman, Carrie Stevens, Art Flick, Poul Jorgensen, The Dettes, harry Darbee, Helen Shaw and more. The entire collection is incredible and has to be seen.
So what is all this about your ask? Here is a link to the auction catalogue page – http://www.liveauctions.ebay.com/catalogs/24706. I’ll highlight a few items below.
Original Manuscript for Trout. Published by Ernest Schwiebert in 1978, the work was a mammoth literary achievement in the genre of angling. Schwiebert devoted chapters to everything from insect identification to casting methods to famous tackle makers. His concise breakdown of the art of fly fishing made him a respected individual by many a trout fisherman. This lot contains many of the chapters which were used in Trout. Box has a label written by Sara Schwiebert, wife of Ernest, reading: “Handwritten Manuscript for Trout 33 of 50 chapters enclosed plus a few unidentified chapters. Enclosed chapters: Book 1 #1, Book 2 #2,3,4,5,6,7,8, Book 3 #1,2,3,4,7, Book 4 #1,2,3,4,8 Book 5 #2,3,4,5,6 and Book 6, #1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9,10,12″. The first chapter of the first book is a xerox facsimile, all the rest are handwritten in ink and pencil. Aforementioned label mentions which chapters of the 50 are lacking. Unidentified chapters are 90 pages handwritten, 30 Xeroxed. An important lot of original material. http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=28221&item=170210642112
Rare 10′ Garrison Model #218 Salmon Rod. Seldom do Garrison salmon rods turn up, and this 3/2 rod is in very good, original condition. It has all the hallmarks of Mr. Garrison’s workmanship: translucent wraps over chrome guides, brown wraps at the ferrules (which are stamped Super-Z’s), 2 original ferrule plugs, a 4″ extension butt with red rubber button, and a screw up-locking reel seat with cork spacer. The locking ring is brass but the threaded barrel is aluminum. The varnish is good with just a few scuff marks. All sections are full length and have slight fishing sets. Serial # U.95.1 is inked on every piece. The cork handle is soiled and starting to show signs of ridging. Any Garrison rod in this condition is a real find, but having been owned and used by Ernest Schwiebert makes it historically important. With the original bag and brass capped tube. http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=28221&item=170210642648
